Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca is located in the southern mainland of Mexico. Most of the beaches offer waves ranging from beginner and expert. It comes highly recommended by top surfers and families alike. Out of the several beaches located in Puerto Escondido, it is best to stay near Playa Zicatela because it has the most popular places for the best deals. Lodging- Bungalows and cabanas are available for as low as $25 a night in several small locations. Hotels like Hotel Suites Villasol which have rooms for around $100 are typical but sometimes they have sales for around $50. Hotel Santa Fe is more upscale for around $150 but gets rave reviews on several travel websites. Regulars who found Flor de Maria in Playa Marinero call it a hidden gem. It won a Certificate of Excellence in 2013 and is a great compromise between a lavish resort and a simple bungalow. Food- The best bet for value in Mexico is to buy fresh produce from the local supermarket and cook or go to the several open seating restaurants on the beach. Hotel Flor de Maria once again comes recommended for a homecooked meal for cheap. Cafecito has mix of American and Mexican foods to an affordable quick bite to eat but they are always busy in the morning. Askim Cafe is good to keep in mind for long weekend getaways. They are only closed Wednesdays and serve breakfast and dinner. Thier menu focuses on sweeter foods like pastries and coffee. Transportation- Puerto Escondido is off the beaten path and away from any major airport but taxis frequently stop there and offer a flat rate ranging from $20-$40 to get to and around the port. Los Tres Reyes has some of the cheapest rental cars but driving in Puerto Escondido not recommended since the roads are poorly maintained. The bus line can take you anywhere around Puerto Escondido and charges what you would expect to pay for a bus in the United States. Lessons- Central Surf owned by Salinas brothers. They are a surf shop that does repairs, gives lessons, and has camps for those who are serious about surfing. Zicaztecha Surf School at Hotel Rockaway Resort's Julio Soto teaches two hour sessions in English and Spanish for $400. That includes transportation and all the surfing gear. Puerto Surf Lessons also charge $400 and they offer Spanish lessons as well to help tourists get around Mexico easier. | |
